Abstract

English listening comprehension is considered one of the most challenging skills for non-English majors, especially given limited classroom time and large class sizes. This study was conducted at Quang Trung University to evaluate the effectiveness of extensive listening in improving listening skills for first-year non-English major students. Over an 8-week period, students were encouraged to practice listening through English video clips outside of regular class hours. Data collected from pre- and post-intervention listening tests and student surveys revealed significant improvement in listening comprehension, vocabulary recognition, and learning motivation. The findings suggest that integrating extensive listening activities enhances listening proficiency while fostering learner autonomy and a positive learning attitude. The study recommends that teachers incorporate this method into their instruction and carefully select listening materials that suit the learners’ levels and needs.
