The giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) is a ruminant whose main food source is plant. Their digestive system has a diverse symbiotic flora. This microbial community converts cellulose in food to glucose and energy for giraffe activities. Different giraffes have a different microbiota in the digestive system. The composition of the food consumed by G. camelopardalis also affects the diversity and number of microbial species in the digestive system. This review provides an overview of the digestive system of giraffes and updates new research results on the microbiota in the digestive system of G. camelopardalis that is able to degrade cellulose and some metabolism mechanisms. In addition, the isolation and identification of cellulose-degrading microorganisms present in the gastrointestinal tract of G. camelopardalis will contribute to diversifying the supply of cellulose-degrading microorganisms. These resources can also be applied for treating cellulosic wastes.
