24. Evaluation of the effectiveness of rapid HBsAg testing in blood donor screening in Dien Bien Province

This study aimed to describe the characteristics of voluntary blood donors, determine the prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen positivity and associated factors, and evaluate the effectiveness of rapid testing in pre-donation screening at Dien Bien Provincial General Hospital. A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 5,686 voluntary blood donors from January to December 2024. Data were collected from archived records and analyzed using statistical software. The results showed that the positivity rate of the rapid test was 4.5%, which was higher among individuals aged 46–60 years (7.0%), males (5.9%), first-time donors (7.1%), industrial workers (20.8%), and farmers (11.7%). Among 5,431 cases with negative rapid test results, 16 cases were positive by chemiluminescent immunoassay and 8 cases were positive by nucleic acid amplification testing, resulting in an overall missed detection rate of 0.44%. The use of rapid testing reduced the proportion of discarded blood units from 4.9% to 0.44% and resulted in cost savings of 67,550,820 Vietnamese dong. These findings indicate that rapid testing is effective for initial screening of blood donors; however, it should be combined with more sensitive testing methods to ensure transfusion safety.
